Hey, I'm Charlie Bartlett and this is my blog about teen movies, music, videos, personal rants. Feel free to make a request or ask advice and dont forget to register!
Weird title, weird cover, weird movie overall. Suicide, depression, drugs, lack of parenting- it’s all here. I just recently re-watched this movie and I have to say…it really makes you think about how cruel the world is when no one communicates to each other honestly. It really reminds me of Donnie Darko due to the fact that the main character takes prescription drugs and starts listening to a creepy imaginary guide. After it’s done it might leave you a little unsatisfied but, but there’s still an important message to be learned: There are just too many parents that care about their image more than their kids. My dad is the same way- it’s like every time I make a mistake or do something “rude” or “unacceptable” it hurts his reputation. Like it’s MORE embarrassing for him than me. He’s probably never going to know the real me.
I’m not really a big fan of Pearl Jam. They just never clicked with me. But I’ve always been drawn to “Jeremy”. This song wasn’t even suppose to be a single and it’s about a kid who commits suicide in school (which you know, really happened). The video caused a lot of controversy because at the end the kids are splattered with blood and people thought that Jeremy shot up the classroom, which pretty much showed me how stupid and unwilling to listen people are. An awesome song abetted by an awesome video, I can’t really describe what a profound effect this song had on me the first time I heard it, even though I had noooooo clue what Eddie Vedder was saying. It was one of my first examples of how music can be so much more than entertainment.

This isn’t the most well-put-together documentary. However, it’s probably affected me more than any other documentary simply because I can relate to soo much in it. As a child I, along with my best friend, was diagnosed with ADD. Unlike my friend, however, my parents refused to put me on drugs. Since the teachers were giving my parents so much shit for it, they ended up pulling me out of public school and sending me to a private one. As I’ve come to learn from this documentary, I wasn’t the only one that had these types of problems.
Another interesting point this documentary brings up is that diet (what you eat) has a HUGE affect on the way you act. Since I was always having stomach problems and no one told me I was allergic to certain foods for YEARS, it explains why I was such a depressing and angry kid in high school. IF YOU HAVE “ADD” OR TAKE DRUGS FOR DEPRESSION, YOU FUCKING BETTER WATCH THIS DOCUMENTARY!
This dramedy movie gets better every time I see it (ok, I’ve only seen it twice, but it’s true). The dialogue is so real it’s almost like the writer spied on my family to inspire some of these characters. The music is great too. If you’re wondering why it’s rated “R” it’s because there talk about suicide and a lot of “fucks”. If it were up to me, this film would be a PG-13.

I seriously hope none of you guys do this shit. Damn, is this why emo kids wear scarfs?! There’s nothing worse than accidental suicide while masturbating. Shit…what a way to go. This clip is taken from George Carlin’s ‘Life Is Worth Losing.’ RIP Carlin. He wasn’t the funniest comedian, but he was certainly smartest and most controversial.
As I’ve stated before, 3eb is an underrated band. I firmly believe that they are THE best post-grunge band of the 90’s and this album proves it. Not only does it have the smash hit “Semi-Charmed Life” (which is about crystal meth lol) but it’s one of those albums that I can just listen to all the way through, and as a result, is one of my FAVORITE albums of all time. Yeah, it sold 6 million copies, but it should have gone diamond (10 mill) “Motorcycle Drive By” is genius and “God Of Wine” is perhaps the most relaxing song I’ve ever heard in my life. Stephan Jenkins (the lead singer and writer) is also one of the greatest lyricists of the 90’s as well. You wouldn’t expect it from such an upbeat band, but 3eb songs almost always have deep meanings.
Ok that’s enough posts 4 today, it’s 3:40 am and I think I’m gonna call it quits for now. Read more…
Since we’re on the subject of kids, why don’t we share a good ol’ song by the Offspring with a good message. Take it from me, if you’re friends are screwed up now, chances are, they’ll be even more FUCKED UP later if they have a negative attitude. The best way to make a dream come true is to wake up.
Now for an actual MEANINGFUL Nu-Metal song. I know POD is a Christian band and it means Payable on Death, but I don’t care. It’s still a great song. It was inspired in part by the school shootings at Santana High School and Columbine High School. Man, WHY did Sonny have to cut his dreads?!! He looks soo cool in this vid! (I’ve also the video below)
This song means a lot to me. Yeah, I know there are better songs about this subject (suicide), but because of the way it’s written, this song can mean so much more. My favorite part has to be “your nights/you can’t sleep at all”. The music video is also included below.
