Hell House (2001) [Movie]

Author: Charlie Bartlett  //  Category: Movies

I was invited to a Hell House back in Middle School, but THANKFULLY I didn’t go to it. After seeing this documentary, I realized that Hell Houses are basically another scared-straight method of pushing vulnerable kids into converting. Basically, what happens is Churches get their teen church members to play “bad kids who need to be saved” and put on a mini-plays about how life without Jesus is basically hell on earth. It’s scary how many kids are converted to Christians after going to Hell Houses. The next time Halloween rolls around, I’d advise you NOT to attend any Hell Houses if you want to have a good time. Unless, of course, you’d like to see disgusting re-enactments of abortions.

Then again…you could always go for the comedic relief.

Klass (2007) (With English Subs) [Movie]

Author: Charlie Bartlett  //  Category: Movies

Here’s a movie that addresses both subjects of school bullying AND school shootings. Even though it’s not as good as Bully or Zero Day, it’s got some good acting and it’s a film that does finally show that school shootings don’t just occur because teens are influenced by violent music or video games, but OTHER underlying issues. Unfortunately, it’s in Estonian, so you’ll have to endure subtitles for it. But, trust me, it’s worth it.

They say it was inspired by real events, but I have a hard time believing that schools where bullying isn’t caught on camera still exist. There are just too many scenes where teachers should have caught the bullying but weren’t in the hallway or remained clueless. Then again, this IS a foreign film so they have different security than American schools.

And here I thought the world learned something from Columbine.

“My Skin” by Natalie Merchant [Song]

Author: Charlie Bartlett  //  Category: Songs

natalie merchant Earlier, I think I mentioned that “The Hall of Mirrors” by The Distillers had to be the angriest break-up song from a girl I’ve heard. Well, this song has to be the saddest. Natalie wrote it for the concept record Ophelia in 1998. It’s about a woman realizing that the man in her life no longer loves her and she decides to leave him. Depressing, I know, but it’s a beautiful song. And a request I might add (who said I don’t do those anymore huh?)

On a side note, I think Natalie looks a little like the girl from My So-Called Life in this picture.

“Just Like A Pill” by Pink [Song]

Author: Charlie Bartlett  //  Category: Songs

pink I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this, but I used to have a chronic stomach problem. Let me put this way, high school was HELL for me because I was throwing up so much. But, of course, nobody in the school would believe me or give a shit when I was late for class until it was too late (I threw up on a teacher’s keyboard once). I had to carry a huge bag of pills with me to take every time I ate or when my stomach hurt. According to school policy, it’s illegal to do that (I was supposed to leave it in the clinic) but I needed the pills so frequently that I HAD to carry them around in my pocket secretly. Kids who saw me with the bag always thought I was a drug addict or some shit. I love this song because of the line “I tried to call the nurse again but she’s being a little bitch” cuz it’s sooo true.

Avril Lavigne - Let Go (2002) [Album]

Author: Charlie Bartlett  //  Category: Albums

let go avril album cover

Avril isn’t punk, but she IS punk-pop or pop with an attitude. Or at least she was when this came out lol. (I HATE that album with “Girlfriend” or what ever the fuck it’s called.) She and Pink were the only girls in the beginning of the new millennium that weren’t trying to be Britney Spears. She was nicknamed “the new Alanis Morissette” but unfortunately, she didn’t stay that way. My favorite song from here has to be “Nobody’s Fool.” Good stuff.

That reminds me, maybe I should share some Pink. Stay tuned folks!

“Innocent” by Our Lady Peace [Song]

Author: Charlie Bartlett  //  Category: Songs

olp Our Lady Peace’s best song about NOT giving up your dreams. It’s also about learning to live with your problems, whatever they may be. Shit happens. I love the line “Johnny wishes he was famous/spends his time alone in the basement/with a Lennon and Cobain.” The first time I heard that i was like…”Shit! That’s ME!”

“Johnny” by Craig David [Song]

Author: Charlie Bartlett  //  Category: Songs

craig david Here’s a song about bullying that is pretty unique. It isn’t screaming rock, but rather a slow R&B song from my boy Craig David! I don’t usually like R&B songs (I find them boring most of the time), but the first time I listened to this song I almost cried.

On a side note, Craig David is the best living male singer, have you heard him live? He KILLS it!

Rare Kurt Cobain Interviews (From About A Son) [MP3 Format]

Author: Charlie Bartlett  //  Category: Songs

jurt cobain DVD cover

While I’m sharing Nirvana I might as well post this. It isn’t really a song, but it’s an mp3 so I’ll just put it in the song category.

About A Son was an indie “movie” (if you can call it that) that took the best bits of previously unreleased Kurt Cobain interviews and TRIED to make a movie out of them. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get the rights to Nirvana music or anything else to do with Kurt, so they basically turned it into a boring slide show that shows pictures of Seattle while Kurt talks. It’s really a pathetic attempt to make a movie if you ask me. For this reason, I’m sharing the AUDIO ONLY of this “movie.” Think of it as a REALLY REALLY good audio book.

Sometimes when I can’t sleep I listen to this until I can.

“Rape Me” by Nirvana [Song]

Author: Charlie Bartlett  //  Category: Songs

Kurt wrote this song in response to all of the people that weren’t understanding his lyrics and was sick of trying to explain them. He tried to be as blunt as possible in this song, however, it still caused outrage and he had to clarify in an interview that it was “an ANTI-rape song.”

Personally, I think it’s about a person who has already been “fucked over” and has STDs (possibly AIDS as well as “open sores”) and is making a taunting statement to anyone else who wants to try to screw with him. Essentially, when he says “Rape Me,” he’s really saying “fuck off” or “bite me” and that he’s “not the only one” that is infected.
