Hey, I'm Charlie Bartlett and this is my blog about teen movies, music, videos, personal rants. Feel free to make a request or ask advice and dont forget to register!
Damn. That’s about the only word I can think of after watching this rare 90’s movie. It’s so different from any other movies I’ve seen it’s kind of hard to describe. Part crime thriller, part romance, part drama, part indie. Some parts I was laughing my ass off and others I felt sick to my stomach. I watched it because it stars Robin Tunney who played the crazy girl in Empire Records, and guess what? She ALSO plays a crazy girl in here. Only, she has turrets disorder, OCD, and uncontrollable violent fits. And, what’s funny is, you can always forgive her in the movie for being the way she is because she’s so damn likable…well, almost.
90’s indie feel? Check. Hot girl? Check. Running away from home? Check. Storyline?….well, it would have been better if the ending wasn’t such a downer. It starts off pretty light then get’s dark; and all that could have been prevented with a little weed. I also wish they didn’t have so much unprotected sex in it- I kinda wanted the guy in it to be like “Umm, so should we actually use a condom this time or what?” lol. This is a SUPER-rare film because it was never released on DVD. You can download below or watch it online. CLICK HERE to download full movie or stream it online…
Here’s a movie that addresses both subjects of school bullying AND school shootings. Even though it’s not as good as Bully or Zero Day, it’s got some good acting and it’s a film that does finally show that school shootings don’t just occur because teens are influenced by violent music or video games, but OTHER underlying issues. Unfortunately, it’s in Estonian, so you’ll have to endure subtitles for it. But, trust me, it’s worth it.
They say it was inspired by real events, but I have a hard time believing that schools where bullying isn’t caught on camera still exist. There are just too many scenes where teachers should have caught the bullying but weren’t in the hallway or remained clueless. Then again, this IS a foreign film so they have different security than American schools.
And here I thought the world learned something from Columbine.
(yes this movie is in English, I could only find the German DVD cover though)
Middle of Nowhere is an indie movie that reminded me a lot of The Wackness, but without the hip-hop. In other words, it’s a teenage summer romance about a guy who sells weed. Only this time he’s rich and is rebelling because he hates his controlling parents. It’s got the guy who played Charlie Bartlett in it, the chick who played Marissa’s younger sister from the O.C. as well as the mother from Anywhere But Here. It’d just be an ok movie, but the acting is what makes it good.
I’ll admit it, I never got a prom date. Don’t get me wrong, I knew a few girls who I knew would go with me…but they were either obnoxiously geeky or fat. So I just went with some friends and ended up having an ok time. This movie won’t change your life or anything, but it’s a nice change of pace from all those movies that portray the Senior Prom as this big fucking party where everyone suddenly turns cool at.
This dramedy movie gets better every time I see it (ok, I’ve only seen it twice, but it’s true). The dialogue is so real it’s almost like the writer spied on my family to inspire some of these characters. The music is great too. If you’re wondering why it’s rated “R” it’s because there talk about suicide and a lot of “fucks”. If it were up to me, this film would be a PG-13.
I don’t usually share new movies, but for this one I’m making an exception. It has to be one of the best romance movies I’ve seen in a while (and trust me, I HATE 99% of cheesy romance movies). Basically, the plot centers around this kid that deals weed out of an ice cream cart and to people at his high school. But, unlike in cliche hollywood movies, this kid NOT cool. He has the hardest time getting girls (and even friends for that matter) yet he has a mission to get laid over the summer.
Basically guys, if you ever were/are a so called “friendless loser with no girlfriend” you can relate to this movie. Hell, since I was obsessed with playing video games and listening to music on my big ass headphones in 9th grade he kinda reminds me of myself. The best part is that it’s set in 1994 so they have references to Biggie and Kurt Cobain. The entire soundtrack is old-school hip hop.
Tegan and Sara are two Canadian lesbian twin sisters that started an indie band back when they were in high school. I’ll admit, I was ADDICTED to this album for about a month. At first, I thought it was ok, but then all of a sudden every track just grew on me (probably because I got used to their voices). I don’t really like them now since they’re trying to be all “HEY! I’M A LESBIAN! GOT A PROBLEM WITH IT!!!?” with all their new songs now, but this album remains their best carefree work. Back when they weren’t really trying to make a statement, just jamming. This is an emo song if there ever was one. (not that there’s anything wrong with emos). Tegan and Sara used to be soooo GOOOD. I found out about them thru YouTube (i had heard their song Walking with A Ghost before and I thought it was Fleetwood Mac song) and I was like “OMG, these girls play better live than on the album” which is true for some songs. Anyways, here’s a song about not being comfortable or confident in yourself. Something we can all relate to. Although, I think the line “there’s still time” is sarcastic. The truth is we DON’T have much time on this planet, and we need to make the best of it. SO GET WITH IT!
Here we have another light film that will make you all warm and fuzzy by the end of it. This one isn’t well known because it’s an indie, but surprisingly, it’s got Michael Douglas in it. Then again, he hasn’t been A-list since the 90’s. The plot basically goes like this: a teen girl’s (Evan Rachel Wood from Thirteen) father returns home from an insane asylum. But instead of getting better, he’s even crazier than before and goes on a quest for buried treasure.
At some points you’ll be like “OMG this is so sad, he’s REALLY fucking crazy!” and at other points you’ll be like “HAHA! he’s REALLY fucking crazy!” You’ll have to watch it to see what I mean.
This is Flipsyde’s only album (so far) released back in 2005 (has it really been that long?!!!). I remember being one of the first people to find out about these guys and I wondered why they weren’t famous. Then I saw them live on Letterman and it occurred to me: they SUCK live. Still, this album deserves a listen. Look out for the track “US History” which explains how American REALLY came to be, not some textbook propaganda bullshit you learn in most public schools.
