Are you one of those people that watch tons of YouTube videos of people getting hurt and laugh? How about videos with fights, violence, blood and/or death? I bet you think you’re so different from them. I also think you should watch this movie.
Let me first start off by saying that this isn’t a “popcorn movie.” If you’re looking for mindless entertainment or a light comedy that you can watch with a bunch of your friends then skip this one. However, if you want to think about how rumors and internet video mindfuck high school students today then this is a film that brings up that point and smashes it in your face. Sitting here in my mess of a dorm room, it strikes me that I’ve been lied to. By people I’ve trusted, listened to my entire life. And it wasn’t a little lie, not like the other ones I’ve heard.
Not too long ago I shared another special called “The Merchants of Cool” which basically showed you how it’s COMPANIES, and not other teens, that make trends and fads happen. Well, here’s another special by Frontline also which explains why teenagers are the way they are- sleeping, boredom, our sex drives, mood swings. Basically anything you can shake a dick at. A lot of shit is explained in this video which reveals that teens are SUPPOSED to be tired and lazy and wanting sex all the time- it’s just the way we’re wired.
On a side note, me and my sis tried showing this to our parents to see their reaction. Needless to say, they got off our backs for about a couple of days…but then it returned to normal. Old people….they just never learn do they?
You’re walking down the hallway, and out of no where you hear someone giggle. Not a sincere giggle, but the kind of giggle that as you look over, sickens you. You see someone who is smart, and respected, act like a total airhead in front of some cute guy. Why would they change and act stupid just because they’re in front of a cute guy? Is it because they think it’s cute? Is because they don’t want to intimidate them? Not knowing things, is not cute. Playing dumb, is annoying and ridiculous and unnecessary. This is a spoken word piece and it really really hit me hard. Throughout most of it, I was thinking “That’s me” Some of the stuff he says, the not fitting in, playing a role to make it seem like that, make yourself believe this image you portray, how unhappy you really know. I just heard this at the right time. Because it sounded and felt like I had just sat down one day and scrawled it out on paper.
Those big, tough, jocks who run around with the ball and only pass it to those other big, tough, jocks? You know. The buff ones with the muscle shirts and the jungle under their arms..? They’re jerks. They get way too into the games, and they yell at who ever messes up. Really? It’s Physical Education. Not, How to survive being attacked by the Hulk 101.
I may have mentioned before that I would quit this site when I turned 20. Well, THAT WAS A STUPID IDEA. So not only am I NOT doing that, but I’ve also hired a couple extra writers to help out with the site. I’m looking for a couple more to help out with music posts (sharing full albums and individual songs) so if you think you got what it takes then comment/shoot me an email.

I know what you’re thinking…PBS Special? Charlie? Seriously? Well, it isn’t your typical special. It basically breaks down how large companies like MTV actually STUDY teens to find out what they like then base off all their programs and products off the research. Have you ever wondered WHY you like certain kinds of clothes or music? Have you ever stopped to think about WHY you think something is “sexy”? HINT: YOU AREN’T AS UNIQUE AS YOU THINK.
After I watched this for the first time I felt so fucking USED! These companies KNOW that teens are vulnerable about trying to fit in and they use that to make money. Sure, this special is a little dated, but it’s STILL relevant today.
This isn’t one of the best teen movies I’ve seen, but it’s enough to put you into a good mood. It addresses things like putting up with your bratty friends because they’re rich, having a shitty after school job, and being obsessed with older women.
Aside from the whole civil-war-reenactment thing, I’m pretty sure most guys can relate to this movie.
I just love movies where it only takes a few people to fuck everything up. Pleasantville is one of those teen movies, but it’s deeper than you think. For example, when the girl in the movie has sex with other guys they turn from black and white to color- symbolizing that they’ve opened up a new experience.
I never realized this until I re-watched this the other day, but the dude who plays Spiderman is the main character in this movie and he ALSO plays a dork. This movie has a lot of symbolism concerning racism, sex, and just plain freedom. I for one, am thankful I never lived to see the ’50s. On second thought, if I were a square born in the 50’s I’d love to get laid by Reese Witherspoon.
