Hey, I'm Charlie Bartlett and this is my blog about teen movies, music, videos, personal rants. Feel free to make a request or ask advice and dont forget to register!
This is Larry Clark’s best movie (the director of that almost-good movie ‘Kids’). Like all of this other movies, it really pushes the limits and addresses teen issues, this one being bullying and how confrontation can get out of hand. If you’re one to eat and watch a movie, I would recommend NOT doing that for this movie. I felt sick to my stomach during some of these scenes. The most shocking thing is that this it’s based on a real experience. Oh, and Alpha Dog (even though it’s a good movie as well) TOTALLY copied this movie.
I also just realized that Bijou Phillips gets naked A LOT during this movie, so be prepared for some nudity.
If you’ve ever wondered how raves work (secret underground techno parties), this film does a great job of explaining the 90’s rave scene in Los Angeles. It’s fictional, of course, but it shows everything from planning, to spreading the word, to dealing with cops, etc. Overall just a fun rave film to watch.
This movie changed my life. Some of my friends were going through a bunch of shit at the time I watched this movie and I was completely taken by surprise at how much this movie had in common with them. Although this movie is called 13, it really is more appropriate (or was for me anyways) for those who are 15. Fuck all those Lifetime original movies (although it does ironically get played on Lifetime sometimes lol); this is what my generation is really like.

There used to be a time when I thought every single Nickelback video was awesome. But as I’ve come to learn, that ISN’T the case. Recently I re-watched all of their videos and none of them stood the test of time for me- “Rockstar” is still awesome though. It basically builds off the song with cameos from a lot of famous people and gives a great “hollywood is full of shit” message. You can watch it above or download the uncensored version of it below. Enjoy. CLICK HERE to download the HQ version…
SLC Punk stars Matthew Lillard (yeah, the dude who played Shaggy in Scooby Doo and the bad guy in Scream) who is actually a very versatile actor. In this movie he plays a recent 1985 college graduate who, instead of going to Harvard Law School like is father suggests, dedicates his life to parties, rock shows, car theft, and hanging out with the punks. Jason Segel (from Freaks & Geeks) also has a minor role in this film. This movie has a great message: “punk” isn’t what you look like, who you hang out with, or what you listen to. Punk is a state of mind.
Technically this movie doesn’t star any teens, but it doesn’t matter. This movie is up there with The Breakfast Club as one of the the best movies of the 80’s. It features something REAL that you don’t usually see in most Hollywood movies nowadays: pre-teens cussing. Shit, when I was 12 I know I was cussing like a motherfucker at school. The plot goes like this: a group of boys find out that a boy their age might be dead and they go on a quest to find him….or his body.
Here we have another light film that will make you all warm and fuzzy by the end of it. This one isn’t well known because it’s an indie, but surprisingly, it’s got Michael Douglas in it. Then again, he hasn’t been A-list since the 90’s. The plot basically goes like this: a teen girl’s (Evan Rachel Wood from Thirteen) father returns home from an insane asylum. But instead of getting better, he’s even crazier than before and goes on a quest for buried treasure.
At some points you’ll be like “OMG this is so sad, he’s REALLY fucking crazy!” and at other points you’ll be like “HAHA! he’s REALLY fucking crazy!” You’ll have to watch it to see what I mean.
This is a light movie that’s pretty fun overall. Basically, these random kids from different backgrounds in the school decide to get together to cheat on the SAT. Now for a little background info:
It’s made by MTV films and is PG-13, so don’t expect something ground breaking. The Asian stoner dude (Leonardo Nam) in the movie is HILARIOUS. Just watch him the whole time and TRY not to laugh. (He also has a small role in the OK film Vantage Point and the comedy Finishing The Game. The strange thing is that the dude was born in Argentina [WTF?!!].) This is also Scarlett Johanson’s only teen movie. The director also made this other shitty ass movie called Varsity Blues. DON’T WATCH IT. unless of course you’re a failed football jock and you’d like to waste your life.
Ok, well grab some popcorn and sit back and relax!
Another great indie movie that really hits hard. Literally. The plot goes like this: a teen boy is sent to a rehabilitational clinic after he nearly kills another teen with a baseball bat. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (yeah, the kid from Angels In The Outfield and Brick), Don Cheadle (who happens to be my favorite actor right now), and Zooey Deschanel (from Almost Famous). This rip also includes the directors commentary (you have to switch the audio channel in your player). This is low budget, contains little makeup, and no cheesy dialogue. Raw acting at it’s best. It’s a shame that not many people know about this movie. Read more…
I don’t skate, but for some reason I’m in a skating mood (probably because of Warped tour), so I’m sharing one of the most important semi-biographical skate movies of all time: Lords of Dogtown. It’s based on the pioneering 1970s Zephyr (Z-boys) skating team. Basically, before the Z-boys, skating was a pretty boring sport. Getting air hadn’t even been invented yet! This movie contains a cameo by Tony Hawk himself as well as acting by the late Heath Ledger and the late Mitch Hedburg. The first time I saw it I thought it was pretty good but not great. I love the style that it’s shot in (it makes you feel like you’re skating) and the feel is pretty realistic (although it’s sometimes trying to be TOO cool).
It’s not until I watched the REAL documentary of the Z-boys called “Dogtown and Z-Boys” (which was directed by Stacey Peralta the former Z-Boy himself) that I realized how genius Lords of Dogtown actually is. Literally EVERYTHING you see in Lords of Dogtown was based on what really happened. I should have expected it since it’s directed by Catherine Hardwicke (who also directed Thirteen and co-directed SubUrbia).
So I recommend FIRST checking out Lords of Dogtown, then, if you want to learn more about the Z-boys, watch the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys. You can download both below.
