I’ve been a fan of Larry Clark ever since I saw the awesome movie Bully, so I decided to go on a quest to watch some of his other movies. However, I was pretty disappointed. Kids, I thought, was overrated, and his other movies are just pointlessly shocking. This movie, however, is pretty good compared to his other lesser known films even though it lacks a lot of action and dialog, but then again, that’s real life for ya. It’s about a group of poor Latino skaters in their young teens living in South Central LA. Some of this movie is a bit exaggerated and stereotypical, but it’s MEANT to be. Notice how almost EVERY character is cliche in the movie. It’s supposed to make a statement about how Latino kids are the new scapegoat for America. Oh, and the part where the kid gets shot while jumping the wall is supposed to be a metaphorical stab at policing the border.
Contrary to what you may be expecting, this isn’t some lame flick about “a chick that roller-skates.” It’s got some great scenes in it that capture suburban family issues PERFECTLY. I may be a guy, but when Ellen Page has a fight with her mother I can relate SOOO much to it. Hell, I think we all can. It’s a shame that this movie didn’t get the box office sales it deserved because it’s got the makings of a cult classic: comedy/drama/growing pains/sports/romance/indie rock/Drew Barrymore… shit, it even makes Jimmy Fallon look funny and he’s NEVER funny!!! On a side note, when this movie was released in the theaters, me and my sis had to drive 25 miles from my house and go to some random indie movie cinema just because no mainstream ones were playing it.
This is Larry Clark’s best movie (the director of that almost-good movie ‘Kids’). Like all of this other movies, it really pushes the limits and addresses teen issues, this one being bullying and how confrontation can get out of hand. If you’re one to eat and watch a movie, I would recommend NOT doing that for this movie. I felt sick to my stomach during some of these scenes. The most shocking thing is that this it’s based on a real experience. Oh, and Alpha Dog (even though it’s a good movie as well) TOTALLY copied this movie.
I also just realized that Bijou Phillips gets naked A LOT during this movie, so be prepared for some nudity.
Weird title, weird cover, weird movie overall. Suicide, depression, drugs, lack of parenting- it’s all here. I just recently re-watched this movie and I have to say…it really makes you think about how cruel the world is when no one communicates to each other honestly. It really reminds me of Donnie Darko due to the fact that the main character takes prescription drugs and starts listening to a creepy imaginary guide. After it’s done it might leave you a little unsatisfied but, but there’s still an important message to be learned: There are just too many parents that care about their image more than their kids. My dad is the same way- it’s like every time I make a mistake or do something “rude” or “unacceptable” it hurts his reputation. Like it’s MORE embarrassing for him than me. He’s probably never going to know the real me.
I’ve probably watched this movie over 30 times. I even wrote a paper on it for school. No joke. I’ve never been obsessed with a movie as much as this one- and the funny thing is, it’s not even that good of a movie. It’s just a mind-fuck basically. So it never really gets old and you want to keep watching it to understand it. It’s actually really nice when you’re high too
Also I guess I felt somewhat of a connection with Donnie because I used to talk back to teachers and sneak out of the house to do pranks by myself (in junior year I spray painted up the cafeteria in my school and they thought it was a bunch of seniors that did it HAHA ) I never had an evil bunny tell me what to do though LOL. This movie changed my life. Some of my friends were going through a bunch of shit at the time I watched this movie and I was completely taken by surprise at how much this movie had in common with them. Although this movie is called 13, it really is more appropriate (or was for me anyways) for those who are 15. Fuck all those Lifetime original movies (although it does ironically get played on Lifetime sometimes lol); this is what my generation is really like.
Are you one of those people that watch tons of YouTube videos of people getting hurt and laugh? How about videos with fights, violence, blood and/or death? I bet you think you’re so different from them. I also think you should watch this movie.
Let me first start off by saying that this isn’t a “popcorn movie.” If you’re looking for mindless entertainment or a light comedy that you can watch with a bunch of your friends then skip this one. However, if you want to think about how rumors and internet video mindfuck high school students today then this is a film that brings up that point and smashes it in your face. I’ve wanted to share this movie for a long time with you guys, but I didn’t think a lot of you were mentally prepared for such a disturbing film. This movie is a fictional account of what some sex slaves go through, however the subject of human trafficking (aka selling and transporting people for slavery) is a very real crime in this world. In fact, a lot of the details are based of what really happened to a girl from Lithuania. No other movie has made my blood boil this much.
As a male, watching this movie was especially hard because, usually when I come across a sex scene in a movie I ENJOY it, but I wanted nothing more than to stop seeing the ones in this movie. I’ll say it again, this is a very hard movie to watch. So much, in fact, that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch it more than once. Lilya (the main character) is subject to a lot of physical and mental abuse. If you haven’t yet seen movies like Thirteen and Battle Royale, then I don’t think you should watch this.
The original language this movie is in is Swedish, so I’ve included the version with subtitles embedded. It’s very rare to find, which is a shame because people need to see this movie.
Damn. That’s about the only word I can think of after watching this rare 90’s movie. It’s so different from any other movies I’ve seen it’s kind of hard to describe. Part crime thriller, part romance, part drama, part indie. Some parts I was laughing my ass off and others I felt sick to my stomach. I watched it because it stars Robin Tunney who played the crazy girl in Empire Records, and guess what? She ALSO plays a crazy girl in here. Only, she has turrets disorder, OCD, and uncontrollable violent fits. And, what’s funny is, you can always forgive her in the movie for being the way she is because she’s so damn likable…well, almost.
90’s indie feel? Check. Hot girl? Check. Running away from home? Check. Storyline?….well, it would have been better if the ending wasn’t such a downer. It starts off pretty light then get’s dark; and all that could have been prevented with a little weed. I also wish they didn’t have so much unprotected sex in it- I kinda wanted the guy in it to be like “Umm, so should we actually use a condom this time or what?” lol. Another Day In Paradise is about a poor teen who has to rob and commit petty crimes to keep him an his girlfriend living in their shitty apartment. But one day a “big-time” robber decides to show him the ropes and together they start to go for bigger robberies. Of course it spirals out of control, but I’m not going to tell you how. This was also directed by Larry Clark (the guy who directed Bully) so expect it to be a bit controversial :).
