Hey, I'm Charlie Bartlett and this is my blog about teen movies, music, videos, personal rants. Feel free to make a request or ask advice and dont forget to register!
Earlier, I think I mentioned that “The Hall of Mirrors” by The Distillers had to be the angriest break-up song from a girl I’ve heard. Well, this song has to be the saddest. Natalie wrote it for the concept record Ophelia in 1998. It’s about a woman realizing that the man in her life no longer loves her and she decides to leave him. Depressing, I know, but it’s a beautiful song. And a request I might add (who said I don’t do those anymore huh?)
On a side note, I think Natalie looks a little like the girl from My So-Called Life in this picture.
Since Afroman got me on the subject of drugs, I thought it’d only be appropriate to share VH1’s documentary about the history of drugs in America. Like it or not, drugs have become apart of American society. Like the movie Grass, this does a very good job at portraying BOTH sides of the drug culture. This includes all four parts (Break On Through, Feed Your Head, Teenage Wasteland, Just Say No!) merged into one HQ avi file. Of course, this aired on TV so they had to end it with the whole “this is your brain on drugs” fried-egg analogy. But personally, this movie made me think about how much I missed out on. Read more…
Some people make good ass songs about love. Other people make good ass songs about weed. Take a wild guess at which one of those people Afroman is. This is one of, if not THE STONER’S ANTHEM. Personally, i think that this is one of the best songs about weed since, in a way, it’s also an anti-drug song. Not that weed a dangerous drug or anything (seen the movie Grass anyone?), but the concept is creative as a muthafukin blunt. DOWNLOAD SONG HERE
Words can’t describe how AWESOME this album is, but I’m going to try it anyways. Basically, American Idiot was Green Day’s HUGE comeback album. So huge, in fact, that they surpassed their popularity i the 90’s from their hit 1994 album Dookie. The album was suposed to be a concept album that tells the story of a punk kid Jimmy who has experiences with drugs, girls, running away from home, etc. But to me, the whole “concept thing” kinds failed because some of the songs just don’t fit in with the story.
For example, “American Idiot” was an anti-propaganda song that basically reflected the times when the majority of Americans supported Bush’s retarded decision to invade Iraq for no good reason. When lead singer Billie Joe says “Don’t wanna be an American Idiot” he’s saying he doesn’t buy into the propaganda on TV and by the Bush Administration. Read more…
This is one of those trippy songs that just sums up the lives of musicians perfectly. Since I’m planning on dropping out and going to recording school, I can really relate to the lines “I’ll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home / Yeah I’ll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone.” (Although, I can’t really picture missing my father lol) Like it or not, we all have to eventually grow up. I always smile when I hear the lines “Yeah it’s overwhelming, but what else can we do? Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?” I’d rather die than work in an office. On a side note, this song was also featured in Skins and the OK movie 21. DOWNLOAD SONG HERE
Hands down My So-Called Life was one of the greatest teen shows of the 90s (if not THE best). I don’t even care if the main character was a girl, this show ROCKED! It was one of the greatest of it’s time because it was one of the first American shows to REALISTICALLY address things like drugs, sex, homosexuality, depression, etc. Sure, that gay-ass Degrassi show TRIED but, of course, it was cheesy as hell. Plus, this show was made back in 1994 so it’s AUTOMATICALLY cool. Unfortunately, there was never a second season, but you can download all of the first season below in HQ or watch it online if you’re a member. Download Full Episodes or Watch online…
