Kiera Knightly is hot. Ok, now that I’ve got that off my chest I’d like to tell you how good I think this movie is. Sure, it’s targeted towards chicks, but it’s not JUST some soccer film about girls. It also has cultural things about how much it sucks to have foreign controlling parents (something I can relate to). Just thought I’d share this cuz most of the movies I’ve been sharing lately are pretty dramatic. This one’s fun. Enjoy it with a friend and/or popcorn.
As a follow up to that video, I think I should post this song. No, it doesn’t constantly pummel you with reasons why we’re lucky to have what we do have, but I guess that’s why I like it better. Plus, it does have the line “no matter how hard it seems/there’s always someone in another position,” which I think just works.

Contrary to what you may be expecting, this isn’t some lame flick about “a chick that roller-skates.” It’s got some great scenes in it that capture suburban family issues PERFECTLY. I may be a guy, but when Ellen Page has a fight with her mother I can relate SOOO much to it. Hell, I think we all can. It’s a shame that this movie didn’t get the box office sales it deserved because it’s got the makings of a cult classic: comedy/drama/growing pains/sports/romance/indie rock/Drew Barrymore… shit, it even makes Jimmy Fallon look funny and he’s NEVER funny!!! On a side note, when this movie was released in the theaters, me and my sis had to drive 25 miles from my house and go to some random indie movie cinema just because no mainstream ones were playing it.
There aren’t many good shows on ACTUAL high school life (except maybe MTV’s Made) that address real teen issues. I don’t know about you, but with most TV shows with teens today subjects like drugs, sex, religion, and family problems are either completely shunned or glorified to the point that it makes me sick. (*cough* The Secret Life Of The American Teenager *cough*)
This is a documentary series that aired on WEtv a couple of years back and documented the lives of 12 suburban high school teenage girls throughout their entire 4 years. They would go through some problems and then talk about them in private on camera whenever they wanted to (hence the name “High School Confidential”).
What I really like about this series is that it reveals that EVERYONE has issues- something I didn’t really think about when I was back in high school. Like my parents, I kind of assumed that there were just “those kids with issues” and then the “normal” ones. Even though I’m a guy, I can relate to a lot of these girls. Hell, I probably would have felt like less of a freak had I watched this back then lol.
I got this requested a LOOONG time ago (sorry KillaB) and I’m just now getting to it. 8 Mile came out in 2002 and became the number one movie in America. At the same time Eminem had the number one hit song (Lose Yourself) and the number one album too. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think anyone had ever done that before.
I was invited to a Hell House back in Middle School, but THANKFULLY I didn’t go to it. After seeing this documentary, I realized that Hell Houses are basically another scared-straight method of pushing vulnerable kids into converting. Basically, what happens is Churches get their teen church members to play “bad kids who need to be saved” and put on a mini-plays about how life without Jesus is basically hell on earth. It’s scary how many kids are converted to Christians after going to Hell Houses. The next time Halloween rolls around, I’d advise you NOT to attend any Hell Houses if you want to have a good time. Unless, of course, you’d like to see disgusting re-enactments of abortions.
Then again…you could always go for the comedic relief.
Before I heard this album I always thought Death Cab was some emo band that I would never like. I had friends who listened to them and no matter what they would say about them, I never gave them a chance. After going through some personal stuff in the winter of ‘05 I heard that song “Soul Meets Body” on the radio (single off their album “Plans” which is also really good). Something about that song got to me, it had a great hook and even better melody. I bought Plans right away and then bought Transatlanticism. I related to the songs more on Atlanticism, it sounded like the soundtrack to my life at the time. Death Cab has a very original sound, something that is rare these days. Ben Gibbard’s voice might take a bit of time to get used to, albeit it’s one of the main reasons people find it hard to get into their music. 2001 was the year of pop-diva bashing for sure. Everyone was getting sick of cheezy “baby baby” songs so artists started to rebel. And who could do it better than a pop star herself? Pink told LA Ried (her manager) to basically shove it and that she wasn’t going to be another Britney Spears. At first, they thought this album was going to be a flop….LOFL. I’m a guy, and I admit, this album was da SHIT when it came out. It’s rare to find a Top 40 pop album that REALLY “sticks it to da man” if ya know what I mean.
On a side note, this album totally transformed my sister. Before she used to be a goody goody, but after she got this CD for her birthday, you could see a DRASTIC change by the end of the year. Back when we still bought CD’s lol.
Bill Maher is probably the most famous celebrity-atheist and one of my heroes. In this documentary he goes around to some of the most religious places and reveals all the hypocrisy of the people there. This is one of those movies that can turn an agnostic into an atheist. I wish I would have seen something like this years ago.
While I’m still on the subject of Ex, I might as well share this HBO documentary about a family who is torn apart because of ecstasy. Not because it kills anyone or anything…but because of the mere fact that it’s illegal.
I found this really interesting because it has to do with a father who goes to raves with his son and takes Ex. The father is having a mid-life crisis, I guess, and he realizes that he needs to live a little before it’s too late. Not that doing so is a bad thing, but damn…he should have done it before he had kids. CLICK HERE to download movie or watch online…
