“Don’t want an STD? Don’t have sex!” Yeah, well sometimes it’s not that easy.
This is an amazing documentary about the girl Shelby Knox, a high schooler who grew up in Lubbock, Texas. What’s so special about Lubbock? Well, let’s just say that at the time Lubbock had one of the the HIGHEST rates of STDs and teen pregnancy in all of Texas. And they’re sex education program was… NO sex education aka abstinence. Unlike most of her Republican family members and peers, she thought that there was something wrong with the way things were going and decided to advocate for better sex education. If you pay attention to anything in this movie pay attention to the reactions that her Christian Republican dad makes- it’s like he’s been brainwashed and suddenly realizing it. Hats off to him for raising a daughter so persistent.
To me, this documentary really changed the way I thought because proved to me that one teen CAN shake up an entire town. This girl is one of my fucking heroes- I mean herons.
