This movie changed my life. Some of my friends were going through a bunch of shit at the time I watched this movie and I was completely taken by surprise at how much this movie had in common with them. Although this movie is called 13, it really is more appropriate (or was for me anyways) for those who are 15. Fuck all those Lifetime original movies (although it does ironically get played on Lifetime sometimes lol); this is what my generation is really like.

[EDIT 03-11-10: I added the watch online option]

Alright, alright, alright. If you’re a fan of American Graffiti or Can’t Hardly Wait, you will enjoy this movie. Maybe even more so than either of those. It’s 1976, the last day of school and the juniors are seniors now. The eighth-graders leave junior high and instantly become high school freshman, which sounds great and all except they are now on the run from the new seniors. There’s a lot of subplots and twists along the way. It all ends in a big party where loose ends are tied up and everyone finds a bit of peace.

I recently found a journal entry of mine that details watching this movie before I smoked my first cigarette and I’m convinced it’s because of this movie. I’m in no way endorsing this behavior, I think smoking is a extremely bad habit for many reasons. Just thought I’d share a little memory of the one of the first times I watched Dazed. It will most likely remind you of long summer nights spent with friends, driving around and being young. There isn’t much of a protagonist, and you may or might not find yourself in one of characters. It’s more of a movie where you feel like you’re along for the ride, up for anything; you get run from the seniors, you get to play pool with the seniors, you get to drive around with the geeks and eat Top Notch. Anyways, check it out, I think everyone can enjoy this movie.

Are you one of those people that watch tons of YouTube videos of people getting hurt and laugh? How about videos with fights, violence, blood and/or death? I bet you think you’re so different from them. I also think you should watch this movie.

Let me first start off by saying that this isn’t a “popcorn movie.” If you’re looking for mindless entertainment or a light comedy that you can watch with a bunch of your friends then skip this one. However, if you want to think about how rumors and internet video mindfuck high school students today then this is a film that brings up that point and smashes it in your face.

There is a definite problem with the way most public school systems “trust” students. Even though this movie is set in a private boarding school, I can still relate to most of it. Counselors are a joke, most problems are never really exposed or solved in order to keep up appearances, and too many students are afraid of thinking for themselves.

Hell, I used to be just like the main character- one of those guys that only spectated. If a tragedy like the one in this movie occurred in front of me I wouldn’t have reacted like a hero at all. And the sad thing is, I don’t think any of my high school friends would either. We would’ve all just bunched up like nosy cars on a highway near an accident.

Sitting here in my mess of a dorm room, it strikes me that I’ve been lied to. By people I’ve trusted, listened to my entire life. And it wasn’t a little lie, not like the other ones I’ve heard.

They lied to me about college.

I know what we all hear about college, that it’s a time to grow and find who you’re going to be in ‘real life’, a time to make life long friendships, where people are more mature than they were in high school. I know for a fact that from the first day of senior year, my mind was on one track. “This place sucks, I cannot wait until I get to college and make some mature friends”. And I heard it repeated about 70 times, that college is full of mature, like minded adults. I heard a lot of things about college from nostalgic adults so please, let me inform you of the things time has yet to remove from my mind

1) In every college, there will be that one jerk you hated in high school. He/she may not be the same person, but you will find they will get on your nerves almost exactly the same way. Sadly, even if you spent all summer working and growing up and maturing, they probably spent the summer at the beach working on a tan to tell everyone at college how awesome they are. Which brings me to my next point.

2) College is still high school. At least first semester, maybe even freshmen year. Having a diploma doesn’t cure Betty Blab over there of her chronic diarrhea of the mouth. People still like to gossip about that party that you were seen at, or what you did with someone you’ve never met over break. If you’re going to college to escape high school drama, keep in mind. You live with these people. And if they ever get nothing better to do, they will gossip. A lot

3) A private school isn’t full of snobby rich kids who think they’re better than you, and a public school isn’t full of poor kids you’re better than. Get that through your head. Even if daddy has more money than this kid will make in his life, you go to the same place. You’re no better than the rest of us, and you’re not worse than anyone either.

4) The guys dorms will smell. Its like, a fact. Collect enough men together and it will smell awkward. I’m sorry.

5) Skipping class becomes a way of life. There is no parent to wake you up in the morning. There is a mutual understanding that you will not want to go to class. There will be students who never skipped a class for fear of consequence all through grade school who will suddenly find seventeen different things to do besides attend class. And because no one tells you how easy it is to skip a class, no one tells you how messed up you can get by sleeping in till 4. (there will be a day when you’ll try it. And it’ll mess you up good)

College isn’t a Mecca for those who mature faster. It’s just like high school in many ways. You don’t grow up magically over the summer between 8th and 9th grade, don’t expect to grow up from 12th grade to Freshmen year of college. And even if you do, realize that not everyone will, so get your head out of the clouds and realize that not everyone in college is going to be as mature as the world tells you they’ll be.

Well, here’s another special by Frontline also which explains why teenagers are the way they are- sleeping, boredom, our sex drives, mood swings. Basically anything you can shake a dick at. A lot of shit is explained in this video which reveals that teens are SUPPOSED to be tired and lazy and wanting sex all the time- it’s just the way we’re wired.

On a side note, me and my sis tried showing this to our parents to see their reaction. Needless to say, they got off our backs for about a couple of days…but then it returned to normal. Old people….they just never learn do they?

You’re walking down the hallway, and out of no where you hear someone giggle. Not a sincere giggle, but the kind of giggle that as you look over, sickens you. You see someone who is smart, and respected, act like a total airhead in front of some cute guy. Why would they change and act stupid just because they’re in front of a cute guy? Is it because they think it’s cute? Is because they don’t want to intimidate them? Not knowing things, is not cute. Playing dumb, is annoying and ridiculous and unnecessary.

There’s this girl in my history class who isn’t stupid, by any means. But she acts dumb around certain people because they laugh about it. Okay, dumbing yourself down to make people laugh? Makes sense, huh. Absolutely not. Why can’t girls just be themselves, use their brains, and not act like they were thrown down a flight of stairs as a young child? It’s really not attractive, and it really will give you more enemies than friends, in the long run. Don’t you want people to respect you? Not think you’re missing half of your brain?

Another thing is when people fish for compliments. I don’t get it.

Like when you’re sitting in class when this chick looks over at you with a pissy looks and says, “I’m so ugly today. I can’t stand it,” only because she knows she isn’t, and she’s dying for that confidence boost that she so desperately doesn’t need. Same concept as the intelligent girls acting dumb. Don’t fish for compliments, don’t act stupid, be yourself. Why is that so hard?

But her voice, the piano, all of the sounds are so full of emotion. It’s a surreal sound, it actually made me think of “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane when I heard it. I honestly think it should be listened to more than once- the first time, all you really hear is her screaming and even now, the long “I” teeters on screaming and singing to me. But I do like her approach on the subject even thought, it doesn’t really seem like most of the song is about Alice in Wonderland.

Lyrics:

Trippin out
Spinning around
I’m underground
I fell down
Yeah I fell down

I’m freaking out, where am I now?
Upside down and I can’t stop it now
Can’t stop me now, oh oh

I, I’ll get by
I, I’ll survive
When the world’s crashing down
When I fall and hit the ground
I will turn myself around
Don’t you try to stop me
I, I won’t cry

I found myself in Wonderland
Got back on my feet, again
Is this real?
Is this pretend?
I’ll take a stand until the end

I, I’ll get by
I, I’ll survive
When the world’s crashing down
When I fall and hit the ground
I will turn myself around
Don’t you try to stop me
I, I won’t cry

When the world’s crashing down
When I fall and hit the ground

Louis CK is one of my favorite comedians for a reason- he may be balding, have kids, and not be in school, but for some reason I can really relate to everything he says. Here’s a clip that every spoiled suburban kid needs to see (or more like understand). I’ll even admit it- sometimes I don’t appreciate how convenient it is to get entertained or look up information. Work that took HOURS to do in the 90’s takes SECONDS today. THINK ABOUT THAT SHIT!

I was a 90’s baby, so I remember when downloading a (1) song took 10 minutes on dial up! And movies….well, let’s just say this site wouldn’t have been possible 10 years ago. I hate to admit it, but most people my age just don’t appreciate how fucking good the world really is today. The internet/technology has DRASTICALLY made just about everything easier. But for some reason people are still unhappy.

Dammit! Sometimes I’m ashamed of my generation. If you’re still reading this just know I’m not talking about you….I think.

They’re jerks. They get way too into the games, and they yell at who ever messes up. Really? It’s Physical [...]

Those big, tough, jocks who run around with the ball and only pass it to those other big, tough, jocks? You know. The buff ones with the muscle shirts and the jungle under their arms..? They’re jerks. They get way too into the games, and they yell at who ever messes up. Really? It’s Physical Education. Not, How to survive being attacked by the Hulk 101.

There is no need to throw the ball as hard as you possibly can, at the poor, innocent child forced to be in the goal because all of the other testosterone-induced jerks can’t spare one round of the unnecessary intensity that they live for. They just NEED to be the alpha, the winner, the one and only champion of gym class. Now, that. Is a title to be proud of.
Last gym class, this poor kid was forced to be put into goal, and the look upon their face when this big, strong, angry teenager came charging at them with the ball… It was so sad, and it got even worse when they actually threw the ball… and it hit the kid right in the face… Bloody nose and everything.

What I don’t understand is how someone is incapable of toning down their rage for 85 minutes so all of the other uncoordinated people in their PE class won’t have to fear for their lives. They clearly play other sports so PE is not their only form of exercise. They really just need to calm down. Making people bleed? Just because they need to be number one in front of the chick in booty shorts and their best buddy? Okay. You’re cool.

Just calm down, and remember, you’re in gym class.
